A complex disease that may require long-term treatment

What is it?

Acromegaly is a rare disease that occurs when too much growth hormone is released into the bloodstream. The cause of this condition is usually a noncancerous tumor in the pituitary gland called a pituitary adenoma.

The Challenges:

Difficult to Diagnose. Acromegaly can be difficult to diagnose because of its slow progression and varied symptoms, which often include abnormal growth of bone, cartilage, and other body tissues.

A Potentially Chronic Condition. Although acromegaly cannot always be cured, it can often be managed with proper treatment.
